Washington is buzzing with a fresh & exciting sustainable energy. You will find a bit of everything – from access to spectacular National Parks, to pristine eco getaways and even a plant based ice cream shop based in Seattle. Our favorite highlights include visiting the San Juan Islands to see wild orcas in their natural habitat and hiking the trails of Mount Rainier to the highest peak of the Cascade region. Talk about some memorable adventures.

Since it’s proposal in 1977, Indigenous Peoples’ Day has grown rapidly, with more cities (and whole states) recognizing the importance of a day to acknowledge the resilience and history of Indigenous people. Though initially proposed in 1977 at a UN conference, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first observed in South Dakota in 1989.

To date, 14 states— Alabama, Alaska, Hawai’i, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wisconsin—and the District of Columbia, more than 130 cities, and growing numbers of school districts and college campuses celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day in place of or in addition to Columbus Day.

To make Indigenous People’s Day last longer than October 12th, we’ve gathered 5 of our favorite Indigenous influencers so you can add them to your feed, learn from them, and amplify their voices.

  1. Andrea Perez (@for_the_love_of_earth)

đŸ“·Andrea PerezđŸ“·Andrea Perez

đŸ“·Andrea Perez

Andrea is an Indigenous environmental scientist based in California, passionate about protecting and advocating for Indigenous lands. She is raising awareness about Wirikuta, a sacred land to the Pueblo Wixarika among others; 78 concessions have been sold to First Majestic Silver Corp for mining. Follow on Instagram to support Andrea’s mission for environmental conservation!

2. Nikita Elyse (@nikitaelyse)

đŸ“·Nikita ElyseđŸ“·Nikita Elyse

Nikita Kahpeaysewat is a Nehiyaw person from Moosomin First Nation and a third year environmental science student, focusing on improving water quality in Indigenous communities. On her page, she talks all things environment, Indigenous culture, and beauty. Follow her on Instagram to learn more about how she shares her culture with others through beauty and education.

3. Tia Wood (@tiamiscihk)

đŸ“·Tia WoodđŸ“·Tia Wood

đŸ“·Tia Wood

Tia is a TikToker, singer and influencer based in Canada who is Plains Cree and Salish. Her videos embody aspects of Indigenous culture, songs and popular TikTok trends, as well as showcasing her own family. Follow her on Instagram and TikTok to keep up with Tia’s content.

4. Frank Waln (@frankwaln)

đŸ“·Frank WalnđŸ“·Frank Waln

đŸ“·Frank Waln

Frank Waln is a Sicangu Lakota rapper and musician who has been awarded three Native American Music Awards and received five nominations, both alone and with his group Nake Nula Waun. Waln grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation and first began listening to hip-hop as a teenager. His new flute single, “Hope”, is now streaming on all platforms. Follow him on Spotify, Patreon and Instagram to never miss a new release.

5. James Jones (@notoriouscree)

đŸ“·James JonesđŸ“·James Jones

đŸ“·James Jones

James’ TikTok is both educational and hilarious– he shows different aspects of Indigenous food, dancing and style. James is Tall Cree First Nation, and he aims to inspire others with his embracement of his heritage online, whether it be his famous hoop-dancing or Q & A about what not to do on Halloween as a non-native. Hoop dancing is an Indigenous healing dance, where each hoop represents honoring the circle of life. In 2019, James was even a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance Canada– follow him on TikTok and Instagram to keep up with his dancing!

Like many holidays in 2020, Indigenous Peoples’ Day has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many large tribe celebrations have been postponed, but online hubs for Native Americans do exist to commemorate the holiday. Other ways to show your support for the Indigenous population can include attending an online class on Native American history, listening to music by a native artist, filling your social media feed with Indigenous influencers, or learning about the history of the land that you occupy.

A big part of being a sustainable traveler is being aware of customs and culture– in America, this can mean recognizing that history didn’t begin in the 1700’s, no matter what you learned in school. We must think about what celebrating Columbus really means, and how it discounts the history of Indigenous people who had lived in North America for centuries before.

Meet Shammi– Founder of Travel4Purpose

ecomadic has been working with Shammi– founder of Travel4Purpose to create a mini-documentary on the Kenya Wildfires. She was able to interview park rangers who are fighting fires on the ground. At ecomadic, we’re super inspired by Shammi, her activism and her drive to run Travel4Purpose.

To learn more about the wildfires, click here and read on for a Q&A session with Shammi about her mindful company.

Shammi is a smiley upbeat girl with a vision. She was born in Mombasa, Kenya and then moved to London, UK with her family at the age of 6. After 20+ years of following the social norm; school, university, 9-5 corporate job, saving to buy a house, etc., she decided to align with her purpose and create a dream company that combines impact and travel.

How did you decide to begin Travel4Purpose?

I noticed the negative impact over-tourism was having on the environment, cultures and local people. I absolutely love traveling and started seeking more sustainable ways to do so. Travel4Purpose was then born – with a mission to travel more sustainably and create a positive impact within the host country, while benefiting as a traveller by aligning to your purpose!

How does T4P support sustainable travel and local communities?

All our experiences and trips create a positive impact. We work closely with local communities to ensure they directly benefit both on a monetary and knowledge sharing basis. Every experience taken through T4P we carbon offset, while ensuring sustainable practices are used. Even if you do not take a trip with us, we are constantly sharing tips and tricks on our social media and website to travel more sustainably and with more of a purpose! It’s a game changer, I tell ya.

What do you look for in your partners?

That our values align – it’s so key. Also fellows you can have a good laugh with doesn’t harm!

What should a traveller expect when you plan their experience?

We have pre-planned experiences but also totally custom-made ones. So literally, anything and everything! We are focused on purpose-led travel, therefore features that align with the individual can be curated and implemented. Overall, the traveller should expect an authentic, impactful and joyful experience that they’ll never forget!

Who are some of the eco-enterprises you coordinate with?

Eco-lodges in national parks, eco-camps and eco-experiences that give back to nature. We’re all about that eco lifestyle.

What is the T4P philosophy?

Connect, Grow and Smile. Our ultimate aim is simply to create more smiles, show us those white teeth!

What are your goals & visions looking ahead?

We have 3 parts to T4P: the travel experiences, our rafikis and the blog. I hope T4P will be able to raise awareness regarding more sustainable and meaningful travel. But also really make a positive difference to numerous lives, both travelers and local people within the visiting country. Finally, I hope to see many more smiles – keep smilin’ Rafikis.

Fall Guide To The Finger Lakes

At a time when it is so easy to think about all the things that seem to be going wrong in the world, it has never been more important to find gratitude in even the simplest of ways.

I am very grateful to be living in the Finger Lakes where I can safely go outside and appreciate the wealth of natural beauty around me. The summer months here are filled with lake days and lots of sunbathing, but when the first frost hits in September, fall moves in quickly.  Fall brings a heightened level of beauty to the Finger Lakes. Vibrant greens quickly turn to burnt orange, deep red, and golden yellow as the leaves change and the fields dry out. Walks by the lake become much cozier as the cool breeze settles in and each step is echoed by the crunch of leaves under your feet.

There are so many reasons to love the Finger Lakes in the fall so I decided to grab my reusable mask and explore some of my favorite local spots.

Foliage

The best part of fall in the Finger Lakes is by far the foliage. I recently took a drive down Cayuga Lake to take in all the fall colors and explore some local hiking trails. Driving along the lakes and through the backroads to see the changing leaves is one of my favorite ways to appreciate the season while remaining socially distant.

Apple Picking

New York State is known for its apples so it’s only fitting to visit an orchard and pick your own apples while in the Finger Lakes.  Honeycrisp and Cortlands are my favorite varieties and I love baking pies and galettes with them. Apple picking is a great way to enjoy local produce, support family farms, and celebrate fall. Remember to pack your reusable mask and pick up some fresh apple cider donuts on your way out of the orchard!

Farmers Market

Situated on the south end of Cayuga Lake and known for its waterfalls, hiking trails, and gorges, Ithaca is one of my favorite cities to visit year round.  The Ithaca Farmers Market is held in a lakeside park from April to December and it is one of the largest markets in the region. The market hosts over 160 local vendors selling produce, baked goods, and art.  Face masks are required and all produce or merchandise are handled by the vendors so I definitely felt safe walking through the pavilion.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Trumansburg is located just north of Ithaca and is home to Taughannock Falls State Park.  Once home to the Cayuga Nation, Taughannock Falls is now a popular state park with incredible views of Cayuga Lake, a well-maintained hiking trail, and of course it’s infamous waterfall. The waterfall stands three stories taller than Niagara Falls and is a spectacular sight when running at its peak.

Traveling has been one of my greatest passions over the past four years, but one place that I neglected visiting was the Finger Lakes – my home. When I graduated high school and moved out of state for college I had little desire to return to upstate New York unless it was for a few days around the holidays. After 18 bitingly cold winter seasons and enough snow shoveling to satisfy a lifetime, I was content with never living in upstate New York again.

While we may not be able to travel the world freely right now, there are many special experiences to be had in our own home towns. Thanks to quarantine, I have spent more time at home in seven months than I have in four years. Quarantine has given me the chance to remember why I should be proud to come from the Finger Lakes. There is so much beauty and peace to be discovered here in a way that only nature can offer. It’s safe to say that I have rediscovered my home.

Returning back to Northern Virginia after 3 years in Sydney, Australia and 4 years in Columbia, South Carolina was a bit of a shock to the system. I came back to a place that gave me a great childhood full of friends and sports and a good education. But it didn’t feel like home any more. I’d spent so much time creating a life in other places that Virginia felt a bit empty.

What I had come to find since being away were the things that make me most happy– like being in nature. So I began to explore my own ‘home’ like I would any other place. I was pleasantly surprised to find some beautiful trails in the area and as soon as leaving the house become a safer thing to do, my Saturdays were spent getting up early and getting to a new spot. Virginia is home to Shenandoah National Park, parts of the Appalachian trail, and Blue Ridge Parkway. Below I’ve outlined my favorite day hikes so you can get out and enjoy the fall air. Click on the title of each hike to link to their All Trails profile & you’ll be able to find them.

White Oak Canyon

Location: Shenandoah National Park. Syria, VA. Around 2 hours from NoVA.

Distance: 9.5 miles, with shorter options.

Level: Difficult

Why I love it: Waterfalls! White Oak Canyon is full of swimming holes and waterfalls (big and small) to marvel at. It feels like a little hidden green oasis. I recommend doing the entire 9.5 mile loop, it may be a bit crowded for the first mile or so but once you continue on you’ll soon have some room to yourself. You’re able to hike up to views overlooking a sea of trees and waterfalls below. Bring a picnic as I am sure you’ll find a spot to stop. It’s a heavily trafficked trail so get there before 9 am especially if you’re exploring on a weekend. The drive from Northern Virginia is gorgeous.

Ravens Rock

Location: Bluemont, VA. It’s part of the Appalachian Trail! You’ll cross the border from Virginia to West Virginia during the hike.

Distance: 5.3 miles

Level: Intermediate

Why I love it: Every time I do Ravens Rock, I am perfectly exhausted afterwards. It’s a decent work out with lots of ups and down and will fill your lungs with some fresh air. It’s also located very close to Bluemont Vineyard and Dirt Farm Brewing so you can get a well deserved treat after. Parking is limited, get there early!

Buzzard Rock

Location: George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

Distance: 7.4 miles

Level: Intermediate

Why I love it: It’s a short climb to the view, and the view continues for the rest of the hike. I hiked Buzzard Rock on an overcast day and was wandering through the clouds at the top. You can go for as long as you like on the trail until you feel like turning back. There were a few people in ENO hammocks reading at the top. If you want some mellow solitude, I recommend taking after them! Parking is also limited on this trail.

How to be a Responsible Traveler in Hawaii

Sustainability has been a meaningful part of Hawaiian culture for centuries. In fact, one of the core values of the Ancient Hawaiians was a concept called Malama ‘Aina – meaning “take care of the land.” To continue this legacy of the Ancient Hawaiians, there are specific things tourists and locals alike can do to protect Hawaii’s ecosystem. Here’s our mini sustainability guide to Hawaii:

Don’t touch the wildlife

One of the most exciting things you can tick off your Hawaii bucket list is snorkeling among the diverse wildlife. On a typical day in the water, you can see Hawaiian green sea turtles (aka honu), a variety of colorful fish, and even spinner dolphins in the distance if you’re lucky! It can be tempting to reach out your hand and touch the wildlife, but it’s important not to come in contact with anything alive in the ocean. The oils and bacteria on your skin can be extremely harmful to ocean wildlife, damaging the protective layer on their bodies that they need to fend off diseases. This also includes the coral reef. Coral protects itself with a mucus layer (just like us humans have), and touching it damages this protective guard. Under stress from human contact, corals can bleach – a harmful process that can lead to their death. Hawaii’s ocean ecosystem depends on coral to survive much like we need trees to survive. Touching wildlife can even be illegal and come with a hefty fine in certain cases. Sea turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act – you can receive up to a $10,500 fine for touching them, or as the state rightfully calls it – harassing them.

Use reef-safe sunscreen

In 2018, Hawaii became the first state to ban the sale of sunscreen with two chemicals that harm the coral reef: oxybenzone and octinoxate. These two ingredients contribute to coral bleaching, which we already learned is detrimental to Hawaii’s ocean ecosystem. Avoid popular sunscreen brands like Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, and Banana Boat – their products still contain the ingredients. Here is a list of our favorite reef-safe sunscreen brands that are made in Hawaii:

● Kokua Sun Care

● Raw Love

● Little Hands Hawaii

ï»żLeave the land better than you found it

This one should go without saying, but make sure you properly dispose of all waste you create. It’s also a great idea to bring along a bag when you’re on outdoor adventures – this way, you can pick up others’ trash that you find along the way. You could save the life of a turtle, fish, seabird, or other coastal animal by properly removing litter.

Join a beach cleanup

Keeping Hawaii’s beautiful landscapes clean leads us to our next tip – join a beach cleanup during your visit! It’s a great way to give back, plus you’re sure to make connections with a fun eco-conscious group of people.

These awesome non-profit organizations coordinate beach cleanups several times per month:

● Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii

● Surfrider Foundation

● 808 Cleanups

Shop and dine local

Hawaii has a diverse array of local shops and restaurants for an authentic and sustainable way to spend locally.

Hilo Hattie is the one-stop-shop for made in Hawaii souvenirs with locations across all the major Hawaiian islands. You can find all the classics here like authentic Hawaiian shirts and other island-inspired clothing, macadamia nuts, koa wood products, and more.

To support local food establishments (and satisfy your tastebuds): head to Foodland for the state’s famous poke dish, Roy’s for a more upscale dining experience, and food trucks + farmer’s markets for always fresh, local ingredients.

Ditch single-use plastic

Add reusable water bottles, bags, straws, forks, knives, chopsticks, and your other items of choice to your packing list for Hawaii! The single-use plastic counterparts to these items are some of the most common things to end up in the ocean. This is a small but effective way to reduce your environmental impact during a Hawaii trip.

Stop the spread of invasive species

A few careful precautions can help stop the spread of invasive species in Hawaii, which threaten the ecosystem of our indigenous species.

You should always stay on the designated hiking trail for safety’s sake – but doing so also prevents the spread of seeds and leaves that cling to your shoes.

It’s also a good idea to wash off the mud and dirt from your shoes after spending time in nature so you don’t bring along the seeds next time you head outdoors.

Hawaii’s lush ecosystem – its vibrant ocean, tropical landscapes, and 1,000+ native species – is exactly what makes it such a special place to visit. Practicing these sustainable tips for visiting Hawaii will help keep it as an abundant paradise for generations to come.
